Track Renewal Makes Progress

The current major task for the Saturday and Tuesdays squads is to lift and relay all four tracks leading to our Loco Shed. Already, we have made significant progress towards lifting these lines (which must have been in situ for longer than we care to think about).

It’s a job we have been wanting to do for some time, but now it’s finally started. As always, we would be delighted to have one or two extra volunteers to assist with this important task. If you feel up to tackling some lifting and relaying, then we would love to hear from you.

If this is something that appeals to you, please contact either Archie Thom on 01292 269 260 or Gordon Thomson on 01292 313 579 to request more details. In both cases, please telephone in the evenings.

We are indeed fortunate to have enrolled several new working members to the Group in the past few months alone, and welcome Alex R, Geoff H and Chris D to our regular work parties.

Our First School Visit

Today, we entertained P6 & P7 children from Bellsbank Primary School. Our first ever school visit to Dunaskin, it was most appropriately one of the Doon Valley schools that attended on a wild and windy day. Nevertheless, the rain stayed away, and everyone seems to have enjoyed their visit.

No. 10 was steamed specially for the school children, so that they could experience a short trip in our passenger carrying brakevan. They were also given a tour of the Loco Shed by our Chairman Archie Thom, and had a short lesson in the Museum Room, courtesy of Catriona Thom.

This is the first ever visit of a school to Dunaskin, but it will certainly not be the last. Already plans are afoot to arrange a number of School visits during our 2016 season.

The Group would like to thank Kilmarnock Engineering and Science Society for organising and funding this event, it is much appreciated.

Working Harder Than Ever

Now that our season of Steam Days is over for another year, the regular Saturday and Tuesday work squads are working harder than ever to carry out all of the maintenance work that is necessary for us to operate again next year.

Essential refurbishment to the railway line leading from the Loco Shed down to our running line is ongoing, with about half of the job done. We prefer to work with a relatively small, and therefore manageable, track gang of six hardy souls, and already progress has been most satisfactory.

Meanwhile, Andrew Barclay diesel loco No. 347 built in 1941 continues to be repainted, and is really beginning to look great. We’re all looking forward to seeing this engine repaint completed in the near future.

Steam engine No. 10, another Andrew Barclay built loco, is in the process of having an air braking system fitted, so that it will be able to operate with our ex LMS Inspection Saloon.

One of our members has been busy over the past year or so working on refurbishing one of our three steel mineral waggons, and it too, is really beginning to come together.

Another member has been repointing those parts of the Loco Shed requiring attention, with great success.

So you can see, we have a multitude of tasks which are currently being worked on, and which will continue throughout the Autumn and Winter months, so that the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre will be open for business once more in May 2016.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting and worthwhile project, please get in touch with our Chairman, Archie Thom, on 01292 269260, or our Secretary, Gordon Thomson, on 01292 313579.  Please telephone in the evenings only.

Final Steam Day for 2015

Our final steam day for 2015 will be held on Sunday 27th September, when we hope to have two engines in steam. Please note, we are not open to the public on any other day this year. This is therefore the last opportunity you will have to visit the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre this year.

No. 10 will be providing visitors with a short hurl on our passenger brakevan, and we also hope to have our fireless steam locomotive working at regular intervals throughout the day. We are open 11am – 4.30pm.

We also hope to have at least two working model railways on display, including a small Thomas the Tank Engine layout which the children can operate.

If you are travelling a distance, please check our website and/or Twitter for an update on the above schedule, to prevent any disappointment.

Fireless Failure

ARPG regrets to announce that the Fireless locomotive will not now been in steam on Sunday, 30th August 2015. This is as a result of a relatively minor technical problem which is unlikely to be resolved in time to permit the engine to steam. No. 10 will still be providing passenger brakevan trips along our demonstration track as usual.
